The J&B Met is my favourite social event of the year, and I will tell anyone who will listen. It’s a day set aside to the same weekend very year, where we spend a full morning prepping and dressing up to show off our best dressed selves to the world, followed, of course, by an afternoon of sipping on whiskey, making bets on races and having lots of fun with great friends.
I had a slightly different start to my morning this year, as I had left SO much to the last minute – when I woke up, I still needed to buy all of my jewelry, corsetry and a handbag. (I basically only had my dress and shoes ready.) I rushed around the mall, and ended up buying a few options for body decor in rose gold and silver at Lovisa, because I just couldn’t decide in the flat panic I had reached by that point. After a quick change at home – slinking into my hold-all petticoat which was an experience on its own – and a makeup session any artist would be proud of, we were all set to go.
Cape Town’s weather was playing along for the day, as clouds rolled over to take the heat off. Gusty winds cooled down the crowds while they watched, with baited breath, to see if their horses would place first. We were lucky this year to have won a double set of tickets to the J&B Met, and the VIP areas of the Flipside Lifestyle Festival and The After Party from DK Expressions. We were whisked away into the centre of the field, where we were treated to ‘melt-in-your-mouth’ frozen yogurt and Nutella crepes from Caldo and Freddo, and a constant flow of J&B while the races went on. The ‘Flip Side Fest’ was definitely more suited to those who were there to hit the after party early, as you couldn’t see the race course at all from our demarcated area. It was great, though to have a private bar and betting centres that had no queues.
Deciding that hunger was getting the better of us, and the food queues were a bit ridiculous what with needing tickets first and then having to stand and wait again for the snacks, we headed out of the venue for some much deserved Asian cuisine down the road.
