After a long week, everyone needs that ultimate ‘kick-back and chill’ spot. I think I have found my new hangout in the Cape Town CBD. This cute little indie hotspot on the corner of Wandel Street and Dunkley Square seems to be the local place for all creatives to meet in the Gardens area.
Recently, I had done a Human Resources training close by, and had visited the sweetest family owned restaurants in the same unassuming square. Maria’s (Greek styled cuisine in a warm homely cafe) and Vladimir’s (Durban-style Indian home-cooked foods) are situated on the Barnet Street side of the square. And I have been raving about these places for the past weeks. Now, I’m going to have a tough time deciding which place to pick on my next date night.
With R10 SAB beer specials between 4-6pm, late night delux milkshakes, the biggest stack burgers I’ve ever seen and a wide variety of delicious #vegetarian (starters, mains, soups, desserts and a even a special) options to choose from, there is quite literally something for everyone here.
I was not disappointed by my ‘Mac n Cheese Bombs’ (R45, 3 big macaroni and cheese balls, coated in breadcrumbs and fried) and hot as hell ‘Wung Tong Poppers’ (R50, 6 little cream cheese and mixed jalapeno’s, lightly fried until brown) were both served with a fresh tomato relish. Out of this world. I wanted to order more, but I was so full after those starters, I can’t imagine what the guy next to me was feeling after his massive Beef and Ostrich, with bacon, avo, blue cheese, pear and onion ring burger stack (for only R90!). All the food and drinks are served in quirky ways, and the staff are so relaxed, they keep you in that ‘chilled’ head-space the whole visit.

If you Google this place, you see nothing but fantastic reviews. I HIGHLY recommend this beautiful bar for a modern Capetonian night out, or even a cosy dinner for two.
Follow them onĀ Facebook, or call 021 461 8507 to book your table at the 14 Wandel Street, Gardens #restaurant. Need another high point? They are open from 11am – 2am, every day except Sunday, when they close at 12am. There is lots of free, safe parking in Dunkley Square, or in surrounding streets. Just remember to tip your carguards.
