George Bernard Shaw wrote that ‘there is no love sincerer than the love of food’. I feel the same way about sushi. Obviously, being a vegetarian, I don’t eat the traditional ‘fish’ type – but that makes hunting down the best plates a whole lot more fun. Here are our Top 5 choices when it comes to beautiful places to eat sushi in Cape Town.
Beluga is definitely a hidden gem of the CBD, hidden away in trendy Green Point, set in the serene courtyard in a rebuilt foundry. The sushi is always fresh & delicious and portions are plentiful every time. Enjoy sundowner specials on the patio or dine in the whimsically lit restaurant. It’s a great place to get together with friends, meet for after work drinks or enjoy a romantic dinner. The Tuna Crunch comes highly recommended, although they have some great platters on the menu if you are in the mood for some options. Feeling like a sweet treat? Treat yourself to a little Crème Brulee.
Unwind, the Cape Town way. This is a local favourite! Relax in Claremont’s commercial hub, just 15 minutes outside of Cape Town’s CBD. Dine outdoors, looking on to the Kirstenbosch Mountains behind the cityscape. Enjoy a cocktail in the breeze, or sip on local wine all day long. I love that they have a great selection of vegetarian fusion options and Bon Bon Gifts & Salushi Heat are winners off the Signature Dishes menu. Salushi offers some great specials throughout the year. Have your cameras at the ready – because everything is served up picture perfect and ready for your flatlay!
Are you the ultimate sushi lover? Active Sushi is a must-visit in the Cape Town CBD! Deep Fried Maki and Active Bomb are great dishes. Be adventurous when ordering, as they really offer some exciting choices. Go hungry because the (almost daily) All You Can Eat special is incredible – and they are one of the only restaurants in the city that includes roses and sashimi in this insane special. The banting friend menu offers some great carb-friendly sushi. It gets really busy, so I’d say bookings are essential.
SEVRUGA RESTAURANT, V & A WATERFRONT
Sevruga seats you in the centre of the bustling V & A Waterfront, a hotspot for locals and tourists alike in the city. The premium sushi menu is classic and clean – with some beautifully created, elite, signature dishes to try out. The Volcano Roll seems to be a crowd favourite. Share the ‘Sevruga Plate’ Platter, which is served with a glass of champagne. Enjoy some the city’s most popular sushi with a bottle of something local, or a delicious cocktail and experience Cape Town in the height of luxury. Bookings are essential.
SHIMMY BEACH CLUB, SOUTH ARM ROAD, V & A WATERFRONT
Situated in the heart of the working Cape Town Harbour, Shimmy Beach Club is one of the most luxurious sushi offerings in the city. Sip cocktails and champagne, while indulging on your favourite fusion sushi dishes around the pool all summer long, and move indoors as the sunsets for a fine dining experience by local Chef Adrian Cook. The Crunch Tempura Roll is my absolutely best (you can special order a vegetarian variation, if need be), and Rainbow Reloaded is right at the top of the list too.
