Following on from last year’s Happy Heritage Day, Mzanzi post, when a Marshmellow Steri Stumpie got me thinking about what my favourite South African food are, and which of these items I had lying around my house, this year I was thinking about the bigger picture. What do other South African’s have in their pantries? Do we all kind of use All Gold Tomato Sauce and lather our toast with Marmite?
Side Note: I only discovered yesterday that Marmite is NOT a South African product? I’m horrified. I feel like I’ve lived a lie my entire life? I mean, you either love it or you hate it, but I loved it even more thinking that it was a home grown product? #shook
Remembering that I don’t eat biltong or boerewors, and a lot of other delicious South African creations, I had to get creative when I did my great South African shop at Checkers for this Heritage Weekend.
After a full weekly shop, I realised that around half my products were, in fact, South African! I think we are mostly cost-conscious and forget a fundamental South African rule – buy local, experience local and eat local wherever possible. After all, #LocalIsLekker!
