There’s just something about a cheese and wine pairing that is just so sophisticated. And I feel just a little bit more adult having gained this knowledge. Well, I love all wine and am a total cheese-addict, so this is event was just screaming my name. I’ve have been lucky enough to have two previous wine tasting experiences at Steenberg Wine Estate and Vineyards, but nothing quiet like this. On this particular day, we were hosted to the most fantastic pairing, with the ladies from TravelChatSA. We even got a sabrage lesson – and nailed it first time!
The Constantia Valley is oldest wine producing region in South Africa, with Steenberg Farm being the oldest Cape farm, having been established in 1682. With nine award winning farms in the region, churning out international quality wines. The valley has been as to be called the ‘cradle of quality wine making in South Africa’ and is famous for producing wines enjoyed by Napoleon Bonaparte and his 18th century royals.
As I say, I’m a big fan of the ‘cheese and wine’ idea – but I had no clue how easy it was to get it spot on, and get the most out of your wine and cheese. Dan, the Wine Guy and our host for the morning, had paired the finest selection of Super-Premium Steenberg Wines with his favourite cheeses from The Real Cheese, a local, artisanal cheese store in Observatory. I was blown away buy how the right cheese picks out the undertones of the wines and how easily the wrong cheese can ‘ruin’ a beautiful wine.
The (clear) winning pairing of the day? Steenberg Syrah 2015 and the creamiest Gorgonzola. I have ‘heart-eyes’ for this combination.
I can’t wait to host my next dinner party. You better believe I’m going to be flaunting some of me new skills! What is your favourite pairing you’ve experienced?
