“I’m quite into the idea of engineering being beautiful.” – Sean Booth
Are you at the point in your skincare journey where you are looking to turn to ‘extreme measures’? HOLD UP! Micro-needling may be for you!
As I have mentioned in our previous blog post, we’re on a skincare mission this year. We’re working hand in hand with the fabulous Belinda to resurface and rejuvenate my skin after years of harsh treatments that have left me aging rapidly. JustBe Aesthetics in Rondebosch, Cape Town is owned and run by the skin technician, Belinda Kingsley, and with 23 years of insider knowledge and experience (with so many incredible reviews praising her!), and the biggest passion for skin care I’ve ever experience – I couldn’t be happier to have her by my side on this journey and partnership.
This trendy aesthetic treatment assists in healing everything from enlarged pores or acne scars, pigmentation to fine lines and reduce wrinkles by lightly ‘injuring‘ the skin with micro-needles. This repeatedly causes superficial ‘punctures’ to the skin, sending the cell a signal, causing it to accelerates collagen production. The treatment smooths out and tightens the skin, giving you a brighter, more even, beautiful skin texture – and after all, it’s that super smooth texture that we are all after. We will go into more detail in the review post – but this is the basics of what we’re talking about here.
It’s SO very important that people understand what to expect from this treatment and what to know before you go under the “needle” so to speak.
After 3+ months of pre-treatments and product use, I’m finally about ready to start needling to get my skin looking smooth and fresh! We have our last consultation this coming week – and then we will see where we are in the journey. But before I was happy to do this, I had A LOT of questions, that seem to not really be common knowledge. So I was very glad I asked and found out a bit more of what to expect before jumping in!
Here are our top 5 tips and things to know before you start your controlled injury skincare journey
1. DO YOUR HOMEWORK!
We can’t stress this enough. Do your homework and get a proper consultation before even doing anything!
Go home, think things over before anyone touches you. Don’t do any work the day you meet the skin therapist or doctor. This is something I wish I had been advised on so please, if you take anything away from this article, this is it! If your consultation is heading towards the doctor or skin technician trying to pick your face or inject anything on the day they meet you without your FULL consent – run for the hills. (Trust me, I have learnt that the weird way!)
NB: Look for reviews from others before you pick your technician, beware of ‘super cheap’ specials, or deals that look to good to be true! A great tip is that you need to look at the technicians skin – if they know what they are doing, you’ll be blown away about how glowly and gorgeous they are. We NEVER want to deal with a ‘do as I say, not as I do‘ person. Choose someone who is confident and really understands what they are talking about. If they are in doubt – GET OUT! It’s your therapists job to inform you of the options of your treatment plan RATHER than just selling you every product on their shelf. You want to feel comfortable in their presence, and feel that they are sharing knowledge and information, understand YOUR needs, rather than pressured.
We chatted to Belinda, from JustBe Aesthetics, and a BIG thing we can suggest is ask for a quote for the cost vs value of the treatment plan! A good, professional skin technician will tell you how many sessions (this MAY vary as your treatment goes on, so be open to change but aware) you’re going to require to reach your desired results, time frame to expect to reach those results, and a breakdown of the costs. You can expect any where between R450 for a peel to around R1200 a micro-needling session (depending on the ingredients, treatments & on where you live.) Just keep that in mind when planning your own journey. But the results are priceless!
2. PREPARE YOUR SKIN!
Don’t rush the process. We repeat – DO NOT RUSH!
Prepare your skin correctly with a mix of selected produces and / or treatments to get your skin in the right shape to get the best results from these controlled injuries. The skin needs to be hydrated, and ready to take on the chemical resurfacing, micro-needling or plasma treatments.
3. DON’T BE SCARED!
Get the idea of scary treatments out of your head. Don’t be scared. (Speaking to myself here too) If your doctor or skin therapist is worth their spend, they will have explained to you in your consultation that they will be putting a medical grade topical anesthetic cream on your face to numb the skin – you SHOULDN’T feel much during your procedure except a bit of pressure and maybe a bit of warmth. I will confirm this after my treatment, but this is what I have been told time and time again.
4. PUT IN THE EFFORT
Pre- and post-care is VITAL! As we have mentioned, preparation is EVERYTHING with controlled injury treatments. And looking after your skin will make sure the results are there. Keep your face clean, up your water intake, and pop those Omega-3’s & Vitamin-C supplements!
There are a few things you need to keep in mind! Avoid retinol / Vitamin-A derivatives, or AHA’s, BHA’s, or anything with active ingredients 5 days before your treatment. No suntanning or tanning beds (shouldn’t be using those anyway!) for a week before or a week after. Always wear sunscreen, regardless if you’re doing this treatment or not – but have a good quality sunscreen available. If you’re prone to cold sores, it’s advisable to take L-lysine for a week before any treatments.
5. IT’S ALL WORTH THE SPEND!
Skincare is an investment – these treatments are not cheap but it’s worth it. Good treatments aren’t cheap, and cheap treatments aren’t good – keep this in mind!
You only have one face, so look after it! Personally, after all that I have done with my skin in the last 15 years, I would not recommend doing micro-needling at home. Rather spend a little extra and have the professional do it in a clean, hygienic salon clinic, or someone who works and is trained specially in these procedures.
