Whether you’re out on the ‘jol with mates’ or sitting on your couch, drinking with friends, it’s undeniable that the Cape Town alcohol trend is still picking a ‘small batch’, local brand over the commercial, international product. Sarah Kennan understood this need and has answered our prayers with her beautiful 100% Karoo Agave Tequila – That is 100% South African.
La Leona translates directly from Spanish, to mean ‘lioness’, and embodies the spirit of the African brand, while still paying homage to the Mexican origins of the product. During a trip to the home of tequila, Sarah fell in love with the idea of producing the agave spirit locally, using the Mexican Blue Agave plant that happens to grow in the Karoo.
We’re all about #localislekker at The Social Needia so I was super keen to try this new product out. There’s a very cool saying about this spirit, ‘either you like tequila, or you are wrong’. I clambered into the crowded bar of El Burro, called Cabrito, in Greenpoint. The tequila bar (the perfect venue, right?!) was full of mingling friends and socialites, chilled glass in hand, testing out the fine new, smokey drink. Apparently, the smokey flavour comes from the traditional Mexican process of baking the agave plant. Delish!
La Leona has three variants currently: the un-aged Blancho, the smooth, easy drinking Reposado and a Honey Reposado, infused with raw honey sourced from the Cape. They range from R420 – R450 in price and can be purchased via the website or if you’re in the Cape Town area, can be drunk at IYO Burger, Orphanage, El Burro, Hoghouse, ERA Cape Town, Copper Bar and The Old Biscuit Mill in Woodstock.
Follow them on social: Website (where you can also order for collection at Drifters Brewery in Woodstock), Facebook, Twitter or Instagram for updates or email sarah@laleona.co.za to talk about stocking her product. The tequila is available at the following local bottle stores – Roeland Liquors, Woodstock Bottle Store and Observatory Liquors. You can follow the conversation via #ReleaseTheLionWithin and #LaLeona
