Definition: Obsession (noun) – an idea or thought that continually preoccupies or intrudes on a person’s mind.
I go through long phases where my current obsessions can, quite literally, take over my life. I go to bed thinking about it, I wake up, having dreamed of it and spend my day wondering how long until I can have it again. It can be wonderful, and it can be terrible. A lot of people talk of ‘addictive personalities’ and although I don’t have one, I love satisfying that craving. It’s the weirdest concept to explain to someone who doesn’t experience this – it just happens, and you have no control. To be honest, the obsession is usually (delicious) food based. And ninety percent of the time, it’s usually sushi. No jokes.
But at the moment – I’m being consumed by scent, especially beautiful, fruity lingering ones. I think I first noticed it when we were at Yuzu Kitchen recently, and I remember breathing in over my ramen and noticing the different herbs and spices quite distinctly in the steam, wafting from my plate. I could smell the soy, the ginger and the lemon grass, with the faint hint of garlic and seasoning coming through after the initial rush of fusion flavours.
Maybe I’m nesting for winter. Getting my home ready to spend those long evening indoors, with a heater and a kitchen full of people, sipping red wine and talking about the rain (you know us Capetonians).
