Beautiful wine, nice birds and fantastic company? What’s not to love?!
Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate has been on my “Wine Farms To Visit” list forever! Situated on the outskirts of the Stellenbosch Wine Route, just, just passed the N2 Somerset West turn off (Don’t swerve for a rat or you’ll miss the entrance!) Vergenoegd offers something that not many other farms in Africa do and it’s really sets it apart and makes it one of a kind. Something right up my alley… and no, it’s not just the gorgeous red wines.
Three times a day, around 1300 Indian Runner ducks (and a couple of hungry Geese) do their super cute parade into the Vineyards to go and clean up the snails and bugs on the vines. The perfect natural pesticide. These beautiful little ducks do their famous parade 3 times a day – so you need to be there to see it!
Apart from the draw of the ducks, the farm boasts some of the most full bodied red wines I’ve tasted from the Stellenbosch region. A favourite from the day had to be the Runner Duck Red Blend.
Gustav and I did a classic tasting, and our incredible wine host, Jan, treated us to a little comparison wine from the traditional, vintage range. I must say, we were really treated! Jan was keeping the wine coming and he wasn’t being shy. I’ve always enjoyed wine hosts that go above and beyond for people who they can see are enjoy the experience as much as they are enjoying the wine.
Although we didn’t have lunch at Vergenoegd, we did a good window shop to see what was on offer. Where usually the wine tastings off small snack platters, Vergenoegd Löw Wine Estate offers you a build your own picnic or platter of a huge selection of cheeses, breads, meats and preserves. The portion sizes were just a bit big for us two (whole wedge of cheese and a loaf of bread) but we would have definitely built something up if we had another couple with us.
Going to need to head back here sometime soon for sure!
