Welcome to the ‘newest’ secret spot in the Southern Suburbs! Okay… granted, Hong Kong Charlie Sushi Cafe has probably been around for about a year already, it’s been on our ‘to visit’ list since the week they opened – and we have FINALLY gone to check it out!
Found on the edge of Muizenberg and Lakeside (right up the road from The Blue Bird Garage) it’s close enough to be a ‘quick dinner out’ and far enough from our offices to feel like it’s an adventure! Meeting all expectations – it’s a MUST try if you’re looking for a simple sushi venue with a twist!
If you’re a follower of The Social Needia, or my Instagram, you’ll know I’m openly addicted to sushi. There’s no week that can go buy that we skip on the sushi meal – it’s my favourite food and I actually count myself as a sushi connoisseur.
Set hidden in the back of the quirky Sobeit Studios, Hong Kong Charlie’s is set up to look like a traditional sushi hangout, straight off of the streets of Japan MIXED with an more modern American fast food diner! Selling mostly sushi (they have a couple of other things on the menu like Dim Sum and Seaweed Kale chips) this is definitely a definition “sushi cafe” and it’s right up our alley! And something else fairly cool is that it’s strictly BYOB! So don’t forget to pack in your wine, guys.
The ONLY down side to our visit was that our waiter (aptly named Charlie) wasn’t willing / able to change something on the menu for me as I wanted deep fried tempura trolls (and they only had fishy options in this) and they couldn’t do them for me. Which I don’t really understand… (Possibly a billing issue, but I wasn’t worried about cost) but other than that – superb!
Find Hong Kong Charlie’s at 51 Main Road, (on the corner of Albertyn Road) in Muizenberg, Cape Town. Call ahead to reserve your table on +27(0) 21 788 9007. Although booking isn’t essential for a smaller table, should you wish to reserve the restaurant or a larger table, you will need to call ahead. Please don’t forget to take your own wine with to your dinner – best thing yet, there is no corkage charge. There is a fair amount of parking right outside the venue, and the venue is totally wheelchair and crutches friendly.
